Does this foreshadow a new era for packaging, reusable indefinitely or almost?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President and co-founder of the consulting firm specialized in the ecological transition\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reset.earth\/en\/\">(RE)SET<\/a>, G\u00e9raldine Poivert details the scale of the transformations needed to develop this type of practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will refillability become the new standard for packaging, particularly in the cosmetics sector?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>G\u00c9RALDINE POIVERT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think we need to guard against standards and miracle answers. Just as we let plastic become the packaging reference, I'm not certain that refill will become \"the\" reference in the future. The right packaging of the future is packaging adapted to uses, needs, and geography. So I rather believe in a rebalancing of packaging towards more adapted solutions: plastics when they are recyclable and in countries where they are recycled, glass when it can be lightened and made unbreakable, reuse and refill when it is well-suited and fulfills a good environmental and economic function\u2026 I think refill will have its place, but will not take all the place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Disposable and refillable: what complementarity can we imagine tomorrow?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>G\u00c9RALDINE POIVERT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two main families: single-use packaging \u2013 which must be recyclable, as required in France by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/pme-regions\/bourgogne-franche-comte\/2025-le-prochain-mur-qui-attend-les-fabricants-demballage-plastique-1404299#:~:text=La%20loi%20antigaspillage%20pour%20une,r%C3%A9duire%2C%20r%C3%A9utiliser%20et%20recycler%20%C2%BB.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0anti-waste law (AGEC<\/a>) from 2025 \u2013 and reusable or refillable packaging. Both are interesting and address different issues. For example, when I repurchase an eyeshadow palette, I will reuse a large block (refillable) and only buy small pods (in disposable packaging).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In which use cases or conditions is refill interesting from an ecological and economic point of view?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>G\u00c9RALDINE POIVERT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reuse only makes sense if it is accompanied by an environmental benefit, and for that, it needs to be deployed on a large scale because there are inevitably transport and cleaning costs. I might emit a little more CO\u2082, but the benefit is that my packaging will be used several times, so it's a trade-off. Another challenge for refillable packaging is the availability of small parts that fit into the parent packaging: the supplier selling them to you needs to have all the refills available, and for that, the assortment core should not be too wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What challenges does refillable packaging pose in terms of material sourcing and recyclability?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>G\u00c9RALDINE POIVERT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Packaging intended for refill and reuse must be resistant: for plastic, a more robust resin will be needed; for glass, it must be made unbreakable, etc. That said, just because it is reusable doesn't mean we should not worry about its recyclability. Recyclability requires limiting the mixing of materials and having sorting and recycling infrastructure. We sometimes tend to forget, but most countries in the world \u2013 around 70 to 80% of the planet \u2013 do not have such infrastructure. This complicates matters for internationally renowned brands whose products, even if recyclable, may then end up at best in landfills, at worst in illegal dumps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do you think brands are ready to adopt the deposit or refillable packaging model, and to adapt their business model accordingly?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>G\u00c9RALDINE POIVERT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The environmental transition we are experiencing is a true earthquake: it challenges our factories, our materials, our chemistry, our practices, our marketing, and our logistics. It doesn't happen with a snap of the fingers. Companies need time to reorganize, and to ensure that everyone works together within the value chain. The whole challenge for refill and reuse solutions is to invent new standards. It's a game played by many: even if you are competitors, the machine tool or the oxygen barrier you will need is common to everyone. Brands will differentiate themselves later, in customer experience, color, material\u2026 It's not necessarily in their habits, but they need to take a small step aside, and some are starting to do so.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of very positive small initiatives are being put in place in the packaging field, and this is very positive because it allows testing of consumer appetite. Nevertheless, what will really enable scaling up, the key, is massification and standardization, pooling logistics, cleaning\u2026 It is from that point that brands can truly be ready to change their business model without it being a sacrifice. At (RE)SET, for example, we have a European program called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theresetcompany.com\/fr\/article\/we-told-you-something-big-was-coming-r3pack-begins-now-and-this-is-big\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">R3PACK<\/a>&nbsp;with 26 brands, within which we are working, among other things, on establishing washing standards.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is missing today is a\u00a0<em>pooler<\/em>\u00a0: an actor who will ensure a real network coverage of the territory with packaging collection and cleaning points. As a consumer, I should be able to easily return my packaging to many collection points, not necessarily to the same place where I bought the product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to support the transformation of consumer practices, establish new habits?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>G\u00c9RALDINE POIVERT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We must not lose the consumer along the way, and for that, the new practices associated with environmental benefits should not be too burdensome. To enable consumers to easily find their refills in stores, it is important for brands to target which products will be refillable. It all depends on the product range: in the case of perfume, to which people are generally attached and loyal, refill can work very well.
