Thanks to the investments and solutions developed to meet these challenges, all Olympic sites will be accessible by public transport. In Île-de-France, 100% of spectators can reach competition sites by public transport, on foot, or by bicycle.

Better planning, building, and housing: sobriety and sustainability are at the heart of the Paris 2024 Games. Thus, 95% of the venues used are existing or temporary infrastructures. The few structures created specifically for the event will be converted after the Games. This is particularly the case for the athletes' village, part of the ÉcoQuartier certification process, as it was designed with a sustainable city approach.

Better preserving our environment and climate: these Games are the first aligned with the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement. The goal is to halve their carbon footprint compared to previous editions. Great attention is also being paid to the natural heritage and biodiversity of the sites.

The Games organizing committee is also not to be outdone in highlighting the efforts made. Reiterating the themes highlighted by the Ministry, the organizers add in particular the question of circularity, which is dear to us at (RE)SET. They have therefore organized "more circular games," we read on their site, which notably points out that "many resources, materials, and objects are needed to organize the Olympic and Paralympic Games. To manage them more sustainably and limit waste, Paris 2024 has focused on the circular economy." This principle is applied in the interior fitting out of the 40 or so competition and non-competition sites. Tents, partitions, chairs, computers, sports equipment, signage… For each object, Paris 2024 questioned the need and pooled usage where possible. This approach, for example, reduced the number of furniture items by nearly 25%, from 800,000 initially needed to about 600,000. After these reduction efforts, Paris 2024 favored rental or loan rather than purchase, to the tune of 90%. For the reception of the public, particularly in catering, Paris 2024 also made strong commitments to limit the amount of waste linked to the event, notably through the deployment of water fountains and reusable packaging. Finally, Paris 2024 encouraged eco-design by integrating it as much as possible into its products and services: choosing more natural or low-carbon materials like wood, reuse, more local sourcing, French manufacturing, working with social and solidarity economy actors... For example: part of the Village's furniture comes from reuse or recycling channels: in common areas, there are poufs made from parachute fabric, tables made from 90% used badminton shuttlecocks, and chairs and sofas made from barriers. In the bedrooms, bed bases are made of cardboard to be recyclable after the Games, and the 16,000 mattresses on which athletes sleep will be given to several beneficiaries including Emmaüs, the Hotel School, and the Paris Opera Ballet School.

A commendable effort, let's acknowledge that.

History does not say, or rather not yet, whether the athletes slept well.

On the NGO side, at least one of them seems rather convinced: WWF. It must be said that a strategic partnership had been established between them and Paris 2024. And as Tony Estanguet said, "our strategic partnership with WWF France and Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations ensures that best sustainability practices are at the heart of our bid." Nevertheless, WWF took the opportunity to launch a clever campaign, around the slogan: "Yes to Olympic records, no to climate records," notably with a very well-made video featuring a text read by the emblematic sports journalist (for those over 50) Nelson Monfort, listing "the records not to be broken." Well played.

However, it is possible to see things from a different angle, as other experts and NGOs have done, quite logically focusing mainly on the "transport" aspect. Transport represents about, like infrastructure construction, a third of emissions. Because a significant proportion of spectators arrived by plane, from very far away. According to the Paris tourist office, of the 11.3 million expected visitors (excluding Paralympic events), 1.5 million would come from abroad, including 65,000 from long-haul destinations. " Enough to send the carbon footprint soaring ", reacts Alexandre Florentin, Paris City Council member for Génération Écologie. He believes that one could have "restricted the number of arrivals from faraway countries by lottery." More broadly, he considers that they should have "reduced the number of events and the scope of this event." In this context, " the organizing committee is doing everything it can to green the Games, within the limits, however, of the current system, analyzes Christine Nedelec, president of France Nature Environnement Paris. In the end, its efforts are comparable to those of the hummingbird facing a wildfire ", we read in La Croix. And it is not " offsetting emissions by purchasing certificates, which are unreliable and do not always compensate as much as they promise " that will change the situation. The issue of air travel therefore remains significant, even if the image of the empty sky (no-fly zone) for more than 150 kilometers around Paris for the opening ceremony might be deceptive.

At the forefront of the dissatisfied, we count the media outlet Reporterre, which for months has been tallying the "destructions" that would make these Games a "social and ecological catastrophe," to use the terms of this activist media. This illustration summarizes the very critical analysis of the Games' impacts, according to Reporterre. On the social cleansing side, the "undesirables" — homeless people, migrants, residents of working-class neighborhoods — were expelled to build brand new districts. According to figures compiled by the collective Le Revers de la médaille, over 12,000 people would have been expelled for this event. These Games are also, in this media's opinion, an "ecological catastrophe" since 1.58 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent will be released into the atmosphere by travelers coming from around the world.

On the sponsor side, if EDF comes out looking very good with its electric cauldron, the presence of Coca-Cola (the leader in disposable single-use plastic), Samsung (with its rare earths), and especially Toyota (automotive manufacturing) are denounced by the entire environmental movement…

And to be thorough regarding the Games' detractors, we should not forget the extremist activists of Extinction Rebellion who tried unsuccessfully to disrupt the games. Specifically, the E. coli bacteria thresholds recommended by European health authorities were exceeded. In Anne Hidalgo's defense, it should be noted that the bacteriological analysis of the Seine samples takes 24 hours, so the latest available results were from the day before, which were compliant. The epilogue of the epilogue, moreover, was that none of the swimmers complained of any intestinal or dermatological issues. And at worst, swimming coach Philippe Lucas explained on RMC, regarding the triathletes: "In Rio, it was the same problem; in Tokyo, it was the same problem. That has the merit of being clear.

More seriously, and to get to the bottom of things, this brings us back to a more general and fundamental question: the management of fecal matter in Paris. In a fascinating article, The Conversation reminds us that over 99.9% of the microbiological contamination present in wastewater comes from fecal matter, whereas it represents only 0.1% of the volume of wastewater produced per person per day. Separating fecal matter from wastewater would thus remove almost all of the risk. Yes, but here's the thing: France chose the "sewer system" in the 19th century and has stuck with it ever since. Although wastewater is now mainly treated in treatment plants, these systems are often not designed to effectively eliminate fecal pathogens. Consequently, health risks persist. In France, only 1.6% of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are equipped with disinfectant treatment. Furthermore, in many cities, and particularly in Paris, domestic wastewater is mixed with rainwater in so-called combined sewers during rain events, where sewage and rainwater flow through a single pipe. These sewers have necessarily limited capacities, which mechanically leads, each time rainfall exceeds a certain intensity, to discharges of rainwater mixed with domestic sewage. Solutions exist: the sewer system for fecal management, even if it has become the norm in western cities, is not the only way to manage fecal matter. Other systems exist, based on differentiated effluent management and commonly called "source separation." These other systems often rely on dry management of fecal matter to limit dilution. They were the norm for centuries and are gradually being reintroduced in France, in rural areas, but also in urban areas. Today, they are being deployed again on a case-by-case basis. Evidence includes projects in Brittany or Bordeaux, for example. Historically, these systems posed problems for waste disposal and the spread of foul odors in buildings and streets, particularly during emptying. These nuisances are not inevitable, as long as care is taken in the management of fecal matter. By observing user practices in the field, it appears that dry management of fecal matter could offer better control of health risk by confining toilet waste until hygienic treatment. At (RE)SET, we are also interested in micropollutants in water, but we are not done with organic waste!

Enough about fecal matter, and for the pleasure of images, here are two to remind us that swimming in the Seine, which we hope remains possible in the future, was traditional in Paris since the 12th century and even very fashionable in the 1920s:

An image not so far from this one, which dates from a few days ago:

In our animal biodiversity section (yes, it's a bit far-fetched, or rather fur-fetched, but it's summer), the little critter of the week is named Beacon, the US team's dog! The hint was that any resemblance to a well-known toy would be… partially misleading! Indeed, the toy manufacturer Lego is not a stranger to this brick, but it would not fit in a child's hand. Because they are the result of a collaboration with scientists from the European Space Agency (ESA), inspired by the "LEGO System in Play." They examined a 4.5-billion-year-old meteorite to print bricks in 3D. And these LEGO bricks are part of an epic project to design (and soon build) launch pads and shelters for… astronauts on the Moon. As it is difficult and expensive to send raw materials (or processed ones) to the Moon, scientists looked for what material could be found locally to build habitats. As we know, there isn't much there, except regolith. It isn't found on Earth (except for a few grams brought back from lunar expeditions), but the closest thing is stardust, from meteorites that have fallen on our planet. Hence the idea of making these bricks that could be manufactured locally. For Lego fans and space fans alike, some bricks will be presented in certain LEGO Stores, including the one in Paris (Les Halles), during the summer.

This week's riddle is, inevitably, linked to the Games.
