ECO-ORGANIZATION
A specialist in implementing and continuously improving Extended Producer Responsibility systems, (RE)SET supports eco-organizations with their strategic, operational, and innovation challenges to accelerate the circular economy for relevant products and sectors.
CONTEXT
CONTEXT
Our model is now under extreme pressure: depletion of our resources and biodiversity, global warming, proliferation of waste and pollution, etc. To address these challenges, establishing a circular economy is key.
In this context, the Extended Producer Responsibility (REP) scheme is one of the solutions being developed across many sectors and geographies. The goal of REP is to optimize product management through the payment (by the companies placing the concerned products on the market) of an eco-contribution, the amount of which is then allocated to an eco-organization. The role of the eco-organization is to ensure the collection and treatment of the product to guarantee its circularity (reuse, recycling, eco-design, etc.).
The expected benefits of such a system include:
- Reducing pollution linked to product waste whose end-of-life is particularly problematic.
- Organizing a system for the collection and recovery of waste to create secondary material loops, thanks to a sustainable funding source.
- The development of infrastructure essential for establishing a circular economy for waste (sorting centers, recycling plants, etc.), creating local jobs that cannot be outsourced.
- The development of a competitive market for raw materials.
- Improving the eco-design of products.
But while EPR is a powerful instrument, it is not a magic solution. To unlock the full potential of an EPR system, it is therefore important to:
- Do the right thing at the right time. The implementation and deployment of EPR systems must be carried out in phases, in line with local specificities and the maturity of the ecosystem, to ensure the feasibility of the system.
- Adopt a rigorous method to address complexity. EPR systems are a complex mix of economics, industry, science, logistics, and policy. Assembling the puzzle pieces requires a 360° view of the system and fostering interaction among all stakeholders.
Lay solid foundations from the very implementation of the EPR to ensure a sustainable system in the medium to long term. From policy to governance, from product scope to infrastructure sizing, consider that the rules you draft will influence the entire country for decades to come.
OUR SOLUTION
(RE)SET supports eco-organizations and their members to transform waste into resources and accelerate product eco-design.
A 3-STEP SUPPORT PROCESS
(RE)SET supports eco-organizations and their members from the planning of a new EPR system to continuous improvement mechanisms that push product circularity even further.
PLANNING / ACTIVATION
Support for the feasibility study and implementation of a new REP system:
- Identification of problematic waste streams and assessment of the current management of these wastes in the relevant geography
- Definition of the scope of application for the upcoming REP
- Definition of organizational scenarios for the REP and SWOT analysis
- Step-by-step macro-level cost modeling
- Drafting of the specifications
STRATEGY AND BUSINESS MODEL
Drafting of strategic / prospective studies on circularity issues (durability, recyclability, investment strategy, etc.)
Development of a reuse system at the regional / national scale
Definition of an eco-modulation strategy
OPERATIONS AND INNOVATION
Innovation programs
Support for operations (eco-design, collection, sorting, traceability, stakeholder management)
